Making Mistakes: Path to Being a Better Teacher

Ken Beatty

Teachers often–but not always–engage in professional growth in complex ways over their 40+ year careers, sharpening their skills, updating their knowledge, absorbing new experiences, and continuing their training in small and large ways. This leads to innovative practices. Yet, every teacher follows a different path. It’s important to share how we each become better teachers, looking at critical incidents that shape each of us as we grow in our profession, whether positive or negative, joyful or heartbreaking, serious or playful. This talk focuses on seven critical incidents in the presenter’s career, from student teacher to teacher trainer, writer, and professor. Join us to explore new perspectives in teaching and learning and pick up ideas you can take with you on your own personal path.

Technology and Motivation in Language Teaching

Joe León

Technology has played a major role in education since the middle of the 20th century and with the outbreak of the pandemic, teachers have had to rely heavily on technology in their teaching, whether they like it or not. There used to be a sense that using technology was inherently motivating in itself, but many teachers have discovered that this is not true. Since motivation is essential for language learning and because technology has become integrated into all aspects of life, it makes sense that we understand how they work together. In this session we look at the role technology has in our learners’ motivation and give some practical advice on how to make best use of technology in language teaching.
